Virtualization and its impact on Hosting Industry

General Comments Off

There were days when the term hosting was referred to ‘shared hosting’ , ‘reseller Hosting’ or ‘dedicated server hosting’ and the highest form of 24/7 hosting support was available to Shared Servers.

The concepts of virtualization over the platforms such as OpenVZ, Virtuozzo, Xen , Hyper-V etc has changed the chained structure of hosting, thereby extending its reach to a much cheaper and solid form of hosting.

When the user cannot afford a dedicated server and he needs much more than share hosting, the concept of VPS hosting comes in to play. However with the emergence of cheaper hosts , the VPS market is suffering heavy competition causing a degraded form of hosting in terms of infrastructure and support. This in turn has given rise to overselling of the VPS nodes causing it harder to find a good host to host your VPS.

While providing hosting on virtualization techniques on either platforms of windows or linux, it is important that you value the data of the customers and the support provided to them.

Hence proper backups and proper end user support is required for popularizing your company.

Picking the right configuration for your node is also very important . For example a node which is required to run at least 20-30 VPS will nearly require the following hardware config.

Dual Quad Core Processor
4-6 Gb of RAM
200-300 GB of Hard disk space (depending on your VPS plans)

And of course a backup server, preferably off site to provide a risk free backups structure.

Virtualization has revolutionized the way of hosting among many providers. many currently hosts even their shared servers on a VPS environment to cut down costs and improve the profit margin.
